Ministries and Opportunities

Getting Connected

Parish Registration. You will find a registration form on the front cover of the weekly bulletin. We welcome all new parishioners.

Coffee Hours. Coffee and donuts are available in the parish hall after the 9:30 Mass on most Sundays during the school year. Come, relax, meet the staff and your fellow parishioners.

Parish Visits. Members of the parish staff and of the parish visitation committee connect with interested parishioners through half-hour "one to one" conversations. The interests and concerns are a valuable resource in parish planning and community outreach.

Greater Boston Interfaith Organization (GBIO). St. William’s parish is part of GBIO which will bring together, train and organize the faith communities of Greater Boston across all religious, racial, ethnic, class and neighborhood lines for the public good.

Religious Education

Religious Education for Young People. We offer religious education classes for grades 1-8 on Sunday mornings from 10:45 to 11:45. Religious education classes in Vietnamese are held on Sundays from 3:00 to 4:30 PM. Our classes are small and designed to help children of different ages grow and develop in their faith. Registration for religious education is held in September.

Little People’s Church. Children aged 3 to 7 are invited to participate in Little People’s Church, a special liturgy of the word for children. LPC is held during the 9:30 Mass on most Sundays during the school year. For more information, or to volunteer to help out, contact Sharon or Gerry Bilodeau.

Confirmation Preparation. Confirmation classes are open to 9th and 10th graders, and are held on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:00 PM. Two years of class, regular Mass attendance and community services are part of the preparation for full initiation into the Catholic Church. Registration is held every September. Teachers for Confirmation classes are often needed. If you are an adult Catholic, interested in working in this very important ministry with young people, we’d love to hear from you. Youth Programs

Youth Activities. The parish sponsors a variety of social and spiritual activities for junior high and high school students. Watch the bulletin or sign on to our web site to find out about coming events. For more information about youth activities, call Gerald Halfhide, 265-0100,

Vietnamese Youth Group. The Vietnamese ministry, located at the parish, sponsors a wide variety of activities for Vietnamese youth and young adults. For more information, please call Father Joseph Chinh.

Sports. St. William's Paris continues to sponsor various sporting activities for the youth of our parish and neighborhood. The activities offered depend on the availability of coaches and the interest of players. In 1998 the parish sponsored a girls' softball team in the Boston Red Sox RBI league and two girls' softball teams in the CYO league. The parish also sponsored two boys' and one girls' basketball team in the CYO league. Please contact Gerald Halfhide for more information or to volunteer to coach.

Liturgical Ministries

Altar Servers. Girls and boys grades 5 and up are invited to consider becoming an altar server. Altar service involves a x session training, and being available to serve at weekend Masses approximately every x weeks. If you are interested in serving, please contact Gerald Halfhide.

Eucharistic Ministers. Parishioners who participate in distributing Communion at weekend Masses perform a vital and extremely satisfying ministry. This ministry is open to confirmed Catholics. If you are interested in being a Eucharistic Minister, please contact Sister Margaret or Father Dan.

Lectors. Parishoners share in the Liturgy by reading from the Lectionary. Proclaiming the Word is a special ministry to which some members of our parish are called.

Tabernacle Society. Our beautiful church is the work of many volunteers who help us to celebrate the liturgical year through their preparation of the setting for worship and maintaining and cleaning the altar vestments and linens.

St. William’s Choir (English). Our wonderful choir sings regularly at the 9:30 Sunday liturgy and on other occasions throughout the year. Practices are held on Monday or Tuesday evenings. If you like to sing, can carry a tune, and would like to be considered for the choir, call or contact Sheldon Lee, music director, 262-7787

Vietnamese Choirs. Two Vietnamese choirs sing at the 5:00 PM Sunday liturgy and on other occasions. One choir is open to all adults; the other is especially for teens and young adults. If interested, contact Al Hoang at 825-3592 for the adult choir and Kien Phan at 265-8403 for the teen choir.

Ushers. Ushers take up the collections at Sunday liturgies. If you are interested in helping, contact a member of the parish staff.

Outreach Ministries

St. Vincent dePaul Society. The Society provides assistance to families and individuals in times of need. If you need assistance, please contact the rectory. Your request will be kept confidential. If you are interested in joining in this work, contact Randy Tobin.

English for Speakers of Other Languages. Opportunities for learning and practicing English are available to non-English speakers in the parish. If you are interested in more information or in becoming a teacher or tutor, contact Sister Margaret.

Legion of Mary. The Legion of Mary visits the sick and does different works of the apostolate in the parish. Contact An Pham at 288-5335 if interested.

Direct Service to the Poor Volunteers join with other parish members to serve meals at transitional housing or homeless shelters in the city. The also visit homeless mothers and children at St. Mary's Home. Volunteers meet monthly to reflect on their experiences or to hear guest speakers share their commitment to the poor.

Celebrations

Our multicultural community comes together for worship and celebration on many special occasions. Watch the bulletin or the web site for specific events. Some celebrations are held regularly.

Full Moon Festival. This joyful Vietnamese celebration is held every year in the fall.

Multi-cultural Celebration. On one Sunday in the early fall the parish celebrates a bilingual liturgy followed by a pot luck with food and entertainment from many cultures.

Tet—Vietnamese New Year. A liturgy and celebration in honor of the new year is held in the winter.

St. Patrick’s Day. A dance to celebrate the favorite saint of the Irish is held every year on a weekend close to Saint Patrick’s Day.
